Introducing Limboo Community of Sikkim, Our Culture and History.

Limboo Homestay The word "Limboo" means an archer in Nepali. In Sikkim strength of Limboo is found in west District. The religious scripture of Limboo is called mundhum. Phedangba, Samba and Yeba, Yema are religious specialist of Limboo community. "Limboo" the name by which community is known now, was given by the Gorkhas. The peple call themselves Yakthungba which again has been interpreted by some as Yak Herders. The Limboos themselves explain that Yakthungba is a combination of three Limboo words-Yak meaning Hill, thum for place, and ba meaning inhabitants the name thus meaning "Hill People".

The Limboos are the authochthons of Sikkim along with the Lepchas. Limboos Domain, Limbuan, spans from Arun River in eastern Nepal to the western parts of Sikkim, flanking both sides of the Khangchendzonga. Limboos traditional stronghold known as pallo kirat lies in eastern Nepal now, in the valleys where the western arm of the Khangchendzonga range ends in the phenomenal architecture of Mount Kumbhakarna (Jannu), which, the Limboos know as Phoktanglungma. This eastern extremity of the Khangchendzonga range commands an imposing presence and the Limboos locate almost all important events in their myths and legends on this peaks starting with their creation of the human race, the Limboo people to be more precise. The Faiths of Limboos is sustained in the limboo holy scriptures-Mundhums.

The word Mundhum translates as the "Power of Great Strenght" and is the most important Legacy of heritage for the limboos because it records all stories and beliefs of the people. Initially passed down orally from generation to generation and recited by "Sambas", the Limboo folk poets, Phedangbaas, the religious priest of Limboos, it was subsequently taken down in written form with the development of the Limboo script. Interestingly, in the period when the Limboo language and script were suppressed in the nation-building processes underway in Nepal and Sikkim in the 18th century, the mundhum reverted to becoming an orally transmitted knowledge base.

Limboo Homestay The Mundhum is divided into two parts. The first is called the Thungsap mundhum and the second is called the Peysap Mundhum. The thungsap mundhum is the original one and came fom the very word of mouth till the art of writing was introduced and was referred to as the Oral Mundhum in books. It was an epic recited in songs by the learned Sambas or poets. The Kirat priests in the beginning were called the Sambas where, "Sam" means song and, "Ba" means the one who (male) knows the Song or Sam. The Peysap Mundhum is a written book about religion. It is Divided into four parts. They are the Soksok Mundhum, Yehang mundhum, Sapji Mundhum and Sap Mundhum. The Soksok Mundhum contains the stories of creation of the Universe, the begining of mankind, the cause and effects of sins, the creation of evil spirits, such as the evil spirits of Envy, Jealousy and Anger and the cause and effect of death in childhood. The Yehang Mundhum contains the story of the first leader of mankind who made laws for the sake of improvement of human beings from the stage of animal life to the enlightened life and ways to control them by giving philosophy on spiritualism. In this book, the leader has made rules for marriage, arbitration, purification and religion. The story of destruction of human beings by deluge and the cause of existence of many languages of Kirat people, the social customs of seasonal worship to the worship of god, the rules of purification on child birth and death are mentioned in the Lepmuhang Mundhum. A fiercely independent tribe, although the Limboos have not expressed their individuality in violent outbursts in recent times, they have done exceptionally well to recover and preserve their culture, Language and rituals.
